main character playlist

I think everyone should have a main character playlist.

You can't tell me you've never had one of those moments where you're driving down a backroad going 50 mph at 2 a.m. singing your heart out laughing every once in a while because you're just so happy for no reason at all. Or maybe there's a reason. That part doesn't matter.

Those are some of my favorite memories. They make me feel like I'm the main character in this story we call life. I saw a ton of videos on TikTok with people sharing the songs that they have on their "main character" playlist. So I made my own.

I listen to it when I feel like the main character or when I want to feel like the main character. For example, when I fly in an airplane or walk through an airport, when I walk to class in the fall with a cup of coffee in hand, when I leave from working a shift at the Daily Beacon, etc.

Sadly, there's also the flip side. Maybe you're in the situation I described at the beginning except you're not laughing, you're crying. Still main character vibes. But that's a different playlist.

Let's focus on the former playlist. Here are some staple songs that are a part of mine:

"Andante, Andante" from Mamma Mia, sung by the one and only Lily James.

"Slow Dance" by AJ Mitchell feat. Ava Max. I could cry to this song, I could laugh to this song. It's spectacular.

"Barcelona" and "Bibia Be Ye Ye" by Ed Sheeran. Honestly, anything Ed Sheeran could go on this playlist. And his new music just came out?! I've never been to a concert (it's on my bucket list, don't worry), but I haven't made time to go to one because there is a very limited number of artists/bands that I like enough of their music to go to a concert of theirs. Ed Sheeran is one of them. My guilty pleasure, 5 Seconds of Summer, is also one of them. Speaking of 5SOS...

"Don't Stop" and "End Up Here" by 5SOS. Remember when I mentioned the sad/mad main character playlist? Well, 5SOS's "Good Girls" and "She's Kinda Hot" are on that one. Could and would scream those at the top of my lungs.

"Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon. A classic. I used to blast this song while I rode my grandma's bike in the rain down in Florida while crying. It was an emotional time. Apparently, my dad also has emotional ties to this song...

"All You Need Is Love" by the Beatles. It's a feel good song, what can I say?

"Carry On" by Fun. I chopped all my hair off to this song for the sake of pretending to be the main character.

"Crash My Car" by COIN. One of my all time favorites. Go listen to it if you haven't.

"Electric Love" by BORNS. Found this one on TikTok.

"Enchanted" by Taylor Swift. A true masterpiece.

"Everybody Talks" by Neon Trees.

"I Like Me Better" by Lauv. I've sung this about all of my favorite people.

"Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen. Not to embarrass myself or anything, but one time, I heard this song playing over a loud speaker and I said, "Gosh, I love the Beatles." #uncultured

"Tear In My Heart" by twenty one pilots. When he says, "The songs on the radio are okay... but my taste in music is your FACE." Felt that one deep down. Probably my all time favorite lyric.

"Soak Up The Sun" by Sheryl Crow. If you've seen any early 2000s coming of age movie, you know this one. And the next ones.

"Perfect Day" by Hoku and "A Thousand Miles" by Vanessa Carlton.

"Teenage Dirtbag" by Wheatus. An angsty one, but a good one.

And, obviously, the most main character song on the planet, "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield. Doesn't matter who you are or what you do, you know this one belongs on this playlist.
